Evaluating a Work of Art Using the Elements & Principles

Evaluate the portrait below according to how effectively it incorporates one or more of the elements and principles of art. Refer to the handout I distributed on the first day of class. Be specific and use concrete examples. Post Due Friday 9/9 by 4pm.

  1. This portrait captures a girl in a vulnerable state because she is unaware that she is being watched, as she is sleeping. The opposing hues of orange and blue make the girl stand out in the image. I see this girl as exhausted, and possibly sad. I see it as late at night after a long day of emotional situations.

  2. Besides the strong complementary colors of blue and orange, which makes the figure pop, the composition is well executed because having the carpet cover 1/3 of the picture makes you feel as if you are right across from the girl and are watching her sleep. If the floor wasn't included, the picture would have a completely different feeling.

  3. Color is effectively incorporated to contribute to one's ability to interpret what may be happening in the portrait. The complementary colors draw you into her face, the primary focus. The fact that she is clearly lying on carpet, instead of a bed, leads one to believe she accidently fell asleep on the floor, which adds a unique aura of vulnerability to the portrait.

  4. It almost seems that the deep blue color is slowly spreading across the person's body as he/she falls into a deeper sleep. The hand is very realistic down to every line and wrinkle. The carpet draws the viewer's eyes towards the person as it moves into focus closest to the subject. The perspective from which the viewer sees this person is what makes this piece of art so effective. I, as the viewer, feel more connected to the subject since I am level with it rather than looking down on it.

  5. This portrait shows raw emotion considering the subject was captured when she was unaware she was being watched. The use of complementary colors draws the viewer to the center of the piece where they colors start to blend, making you look at the subjects face. The texture of the carpet is compelling and helps soften the edges of this portrait.

  6. The use of vivid shades of colors helps the piece to gain more character. If the piece was done in black and white, it would be extremly difficult for one to see as many fine details that are brought to life with the use of vibrant colors. The transition between the bright yellows and oranges to the blues sort of sweep across the piece and acts as a transition between being awake and sleep.

  7. This piece shows many appealing qualities. The viewers eye immediately is drawn to the colors that stand out. The movement of the pencil is shown and makes the piece realistic. There is silver and white within the figure that stand out in the piece and give an illusion of dream. You feel the emotion and energy of the sleeper on the rugged carpet. The point of view that the drawing is made is as if you were laying on the floor in front of the subject. I like this piece a lot for the colors, and the realism that are expressed.

  8. This pastel is very inspiring because of the blending and color technique especially because pastel is one of my favorite techniques to use. I like the use of warmer colors where light would be hitting the person, and darker, colder colors in the more shaded regions of the picture.

  9. The contrast of color works effectively to create a mood in this piece of art. The intensity of the complementary colors adds depth and allows for the piece to portray emotion. I was also extremely impressed with how the artist simulated texture with their mark making to make different elements appear realistic. I was specifically drawn to the hair because I think it is amazing how the artist used pastel to embody such a detailed component.

  10. The vivid contrasting colors in this piece really capture ones eye and hints to the mood or emotion of the piece. The colors used in this piece seem to give her layers as if each layer represents a different emotion. I really like the fact that the artist kept half her face in a dark blue color and began to blur that blue in to the brighter colors that continued across her face.
