New Concentration

My concentration is portraits, but I want to show that portraits don’t have to apply to only people, for they can consist of inanimate objects as well as living subjects. I will have people as my subjects, but I also want to have inanimate objects and animals as my subjects. My goal for inanimate subjects is to give them life through motion, color, etc. My main medium is acrylic paint but I want to explore in mediums such as collage, scratchboard, and possibly digital artwork so I can incorporate my photography.

Improved Concentration

For my new concentration I want to focus on portraits. The reason I began to love art my whole life was drawing and painting people. I want to go back to my main inspiration for art so that I will be able to succeed and enjoy every piece I work on. I enjoy creating eyes and making a more realistic sense of people and be able to improve on my skills with this concentration.

PEER CRITIQUE 50 points, due Monday, January 30th (end of class)

NOTE: Before selecting a peer to critique, make sure that someone hasn't already posted a critique for that piece. Each student should only be reviewed by one person, that way each of you will have a peer critique. Post your response as a COMMENT under the image of the student you are critiquing, NOT as a separate/New Post.

Assignment: Choose one of the images posted from the last concentration project. Answer the following in complete sentences. Remember that giving and receiving constructive criticism is an important part of creative development. Student Artist you are critiquing:_______________________________

1. How did the artist use the elements and principles of design?

Elements: Principles:
Value Pattern
Space Movement
Texture Contrast
Form Rhythm
Shape Unity
Line Balance
Color Emphasis

Are any in particular used more effectively than others?

Would inclusion or greater attention of any of the above improve the piece in your opinion?

2. Is this piece….

Abstract Figurative Non-Figurative

Explain why you categorized their work this way.

3. Interpretation (your opinion): What do you think the artist was trying to communicate with this piece? What questions, if any, do you have about this piece?

4. Read the artist’s concentration statement from the last post. Do you feel that a clear connection can be made between the piece and the central idea of the artist’s concentration statement?

5. In your opinion, what are the strengths of this piece?

6. In your opinion, what could make this a stronger piece?

Concentration Revison

I am changing my concentration to emotions. The subjects of my concentration won't be limited to specific subjects, but my goal is to convey a very specific emotion through the way I present the art. For example, I will convey the emotion through the particular subject of the piece that I choose, the lightning, the perspective, or the colors used for example.

I will keep the same concentration and have stayed on the path of my idea so far:
For my Concentration this year I will be doing "Bad Habits." I know that i can include many different habits and will be able to think of many ideas for the remainder of the school year. I want to include the habits people in our society get themselves into, and express the different ideas through my artwork. I can relate them to myself and also to others around me, and make the viewer interested in the every day habits we don't think too much about though my work.

Concentration Revised

I feel that my concentration has stayed relatively the same to what it has been since we have started. The only thing that I would say has changed is the idea of focusing more of "hidden patterns" in life (possibly in nature) rather than the obvious patterns we see daily.

Previous concentration statement: "My concentration for this year will be the idea of patters. In our daily life, there are many patterns. For the meaning of pattern, I am not focusing on shapes or lines, but more in life. There are patterns in natural things, like nature and architecture, and also in peoples actions and thoughts. I am looking to find some around myself (in either the natural or human settings) and relate each personally back to me. I would like to use the technique of printmaking, charcoal/pastel drawings, and also painting."

Concentration Statement

My concentration has remained relatively the same. The only revision or change to my concentration would be the focus in which motion takes place. I want to work on pieces that display motion in an urban landscape. I took interest in urban art and would like to integrate motion into this urban form of art.

Concentration Statement Refinement

By 8am Monday, January 9th:
25 points

Revisit your original concentration statement. Determine if your direction/interests have changed. This is your final opportunity to refine and rework your concentration before the end of the year. Try to narrow the scope of your concentration as much as possible. Remember that your concentration is supposed to be a cohesive body of work investigating one specific theme or idea.
If your concentration statement will remain the same, please post the original statement.
