KATIE SCHNEIDER

  1. 1. Katie used the elements and principles of design such as color emphasis. Skin isn't really purple, but to make the effect of lighting in a tanning bed, she changed the skin tone. I think this use of color in the piece is crucial and Katie executed it very well.

    2. I would classify this piece as Figurative art, because there is a person in the painting, who is the focus. Katie's original concentration topic was "bad habits" and it is people that have the habit not the object.
Explain why you categorized their work this way.

    3. I believe that Katie was trying to reveal the dangers of using tanning beds. When I see the girl laying flat in the painting, it reminds me of a girl laying in a coffin, which ultimately may be one's destiny if they continue this habit as it causes skin cancer. I did not realize this until I looked at Katie's piece.

    4. I definitely see a connection between this piece and Katie's concentration. She is exposing a bad habit that many of our friends, especially girls, have.

    5. I think the way the girl shrinks into the background is very good! It really gives a sense that you are peering into this machine.

    6. One thing that I think could make the piece stronger is the use of space. I feel that if the girl took up more space in the piece the viewer would be able to get a feeling of the compactness inside one of the tanning beds.

Well done Katie! Can't wait to see your next pieces on your new concentration! :)
