  1. Student Artist you are critiquing: Josh

    1. How did the artist use the elements and principles of design?

    Elements: Principles:
Value Pattern: There is a lot of visual/value pattern within this piece. Especially with the crossing lines across and the use of circles.
Color Emphasis: There is also a strong color emphasis with the use of opposite primary colors. It draws more attention to the center because of how the orange pops next to the blue.

Are any in particular used more effectively than others?
I think that the value pattern is especially strong and makes the piece more interesting to the viewer.

Would inclusion or greater attention of any of the above improve the piece in your opinion?
All of the principles above are included successfully in my opinion. I think that if any more were to be added in it would make the piece too hectic.

    2. Is this piece….

Abstract Figurative Non-Figurative. Explain why you categorized their work this way.
This piece is much more abstract because it does not resemble anything and is left open to interpretation.

    3. Interpretation (your opinion): What do you think the artist was trying to communicate with this piece? What questions, if any, do you have about this piece?
I think that because this piece is so abstract that it brings up more questions than actual ideas intended to be communicated. However, I think that it is a strong quality of the piece to be able to raise questions and leave the meaning of the piece so open. Some questions it raises is are the lines placed in specific areas? Are they leading to something in particular?

    4. Read the artist’s concentration statement from the last post. Do you feel that a clear connection can be made between the piece and the central idea of the artist’s concentration statement?
I am unsure of what the artists’ concentration is.

    5. In your opinion, what are the strengths of this piece?
I think that strengths of this piece is the use of patterns and colors. The patterns are interesting and intriguing to look at while the colors add more depth and contrast to the piece. Also, I like the size of the actual painting in real life. I think that if the artist had made it any bigger it would take away the impact of the piece.
    6. In your opinion, what could make this a stronger piece?
I think maybe more direct connection to the artists’ concentration could potentially make it stronger, however, I think the piece is very well done and executed.
