MAGGIE NEMECZ

  1. Student Artist you are critiquing: Maggie

    1. How did the artist use the elements and principles of design?

Shape Unity- The idea to have all of the pictures together on their own rather than try and combine them together as one, was a much better idea. I think it gives the piece a sense that although each smaller picture is just one moment in someone’s life, all of them together create a timeline effect and demonstrates the artist’s goal for the piece very well.

Form Rhythm- The concept of the clock over the whole piece really helps to connect all of the smaller pictures together into one piece that flows very well. The way which the pictures flow around the clock really help to execute the concept of time passing and the study of one individual’s life.

Are any in particular used more effectively than others?

The overall color and mood of the piece is represented well. The way which the transfer process created an almost nostalgic look for the entire piece, helped to put an even more emphasis on the concept of time and its passing.

Would inclusion or greater attention of any of the above improve the piece in your opinion?

I think that there was great time and effort put into each of the principles of design. I think the artist demonstrated a great knowledge of understanding each of the principle of design and when the piece was executed, each concept and principle was taken into account.

    2. Is this piece…. Figurative

I would say that this piece best represents a figurative narrative of an individual’s life and the concept of time passing through the years. This piece best fits a figurative piece, because throughout the entire piece it is easy to tell that each figure shown is extremely realistic and lifelike.

    3. Interpretation (your opinion): What do you think the artist was trying to communicate with this piece? What questions, if any, do you have about this piece?

I think that the artist was trying to communicate the idea of time passing as an individual ages. The artist also communicates and captures significant effects within that individual’s lifetime. My only question would be, “are the pictures supposed to be arranged in an almost timeline like appearance?”, because even if not intentional I think that the way they are arranged easily tells the story of someone’s life with little or no interpretation needed in order to understand the piece.
    4. Read the artist’s concentration statement from the last post. Do you feel that a clear connection can be made between the piece and the central idea of the artist’s concentration statement?

I feel that its easy to both understand the artist’s concentration and the connection between the idea of the piece. This piece goes perfectly with the philosophy behind the artist’s concentration statement.

    5. In your opinion, what are the strengths of this piece?

I think the strengths for this piece are the way the piece flows very well together and unusual transfer technique, which the artist used in order to capture each of the pictures onto the piece. I think that the clock adds a very interesting and instrumental part to the piece, without it the concept of the piece would be a little more difficult to understand.

    6. In your opinion, what could make this a stronger piece?

I think that there is little if not nothing needed to be added to this piece. If there was anything else added to the piece I think it would make the piece cluttered and messy in appearance. I especially like the space between each of the pictures and the color chosen as the background for the piece, and if anything else was done I feel the piece would loose its connection to the artist.
