Self Reflection: Assignment 1

For your first assignment of the term you were asked to create a self-portrait that "communicates beyond the physical". How did you interpret the assignment, and do you think you were successful? How do you feel about the outcome of your piece overall in regards to both technique (execution) and concept? Response due by 4pm on Friday, September 30th.

  1. I think I succeeded in making my self-portrait how I wanted it to come out. I didn't do it to represent a part of me but more to push myself as an artist. My overall outcome was exactly how I wanted it, by pushing my darks and lights.

  2. I think I did quite well with my self portrait. At times I found shading the dark regions frustrating, but in the end it all worked out. Ultimately, I enjoyed watching the piece form (from what I kept referring to as a monkey and Michael Jackson -like drawing) to a figure that resembled me in many ways! I enjoyed working with pastels, but I found it much more challenging than I thought it would be.

  3. Although I'm not finished with my self-portrait, I am happy with the progress I've made so far. The picture that I based the portrait on was much different then I'm normally perceived, forcing me to portray a different emotion. I am working to make the portrait look realistic while also portraying a specific style. This piece is much more challenging then anything I've ever done before so I'm excited to see the outcome.

  4. Although I was not given the chance to complete my peace, I enjoyed the concept that I was going for. The blurs of the face and eyes really presented challenges for me. It was a new concept for me to do the different types of shading with the charcoal. This piece that i worked on is no doubt one of the hardest pieces ive ever worked on due to the fact that there was so much detail that had to be processed. Overall i enjoyed the concept and image that I envisioned but wasn't in-love with how i executed to piece.
